This Sunday
Sermon Title: Face Your Past
We all have interactions in our past that we wish we could do over. Thankfully, God can forgive us and make us new no matter what we've done in the past. The challenge comes when our past problems with people impact our current relationships. What if the new creation God is making us to be didn't have to avoid the past, but could actually restore what we broke and make all things new?
Sermon Points and Questions
1. Who is the person God brings to mind this morning that you need to seek reconcilation and/or restitution with? Who needs to hear you say, "I'm sorry, I'm responsible. If there is something I can do about it, I’m willing to do it."
2. What is one way you've seen unresolved past relationships impact your current relationships?
3. When is the last time you visited "the chief tax collectors" home? Who would that be in your life?
4. Who is up in a tree just hoping that you would stop and notice them and call them by name (maybe instead of calling them a off-putting label)?
5. What is stopping you from doing Step 8 in AA -
"Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all."
6. God took responsibility for sin he didn't commit and paid a high price to be in a right relationship with you. What responsibility can you take (even if you don't believe you did anything wrong), and what price can you pay to do what you can to resolve/restore/redeem a relationship?
Luke 19:1-10 NLT
Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. 2 There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. 3 He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.
5 When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.”
6 Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. 7 But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled.
8 Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!”
9 Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man[a] came to seek and save those who are lost.”
